Place of memory recognized at the 2021 International Chapter Architecture Awards

The Sir John Monash Center, the museum and interpretation center in France that tells the story of Australian service on the Western Front, is the most awarded project by the Australian Institute of Architects 2021 International Chapter Awards.

Designed by Cox Architecture with Williams, Abrahams and Lampros, the project received the International Named Chapter Award for Heritage and a Chapter Award for Public Architecture. Located on the grounds of the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery in northern France, the center is the hub of the Australian Remembrance Trail, which connects the sites of significant Australian battles during World War I.

The jury was impressed with the architects’ approach to such a busy site.

This important project not only honors Australia’s military history, but also showcases the talent of Australian architects working overseas, ”said Jennifer Nichols, Executive Director of the International Section. “The center is a place of reflection as well as a place for community ceremonies and a hub for historical research and is a worthy recipient of the only named award presented at the 2021 International Chapter Awards.”

The “named awards” in the Australian Institute of Architects awards programs are the highest awards in each category and are usually named after a renowned architect.

Two other Chapter Awards were presented to the One and Only Desaru Coast in Malaysia, the hotel and resort of Kerry Hill Architects; and the gift shops of the National Museum of Qatar by Kochi Takada Architects. The winners are:
